You already know the primary crusher takes the big boulders and makes them smaller. But in most mining operations, that’s not the final step. The rock needs to get even smaller before it’s ready for the mill or for sale. That’s where the secondary crusher comes in.
What Exactly Is a Secondary Crusher?
A secondary crusher is the machine that processes material after it has passed through the primary crusher. Its job is to further reduce the rock to a consistent size range—typically from 6–10 inches down to 1–3 inches—making it suitable for:
Conveying to the next stage.
Feeding into tertiary crushers or grinding mills.
Serving as a final product for certain applications (though usually more reduction follows).
In short, it’s the essential second step in the size reduction process.
What Types of Crushers Are Used in Secondary Crushing?
While primary crushing is about brute force and accepting oversized feed, secondary crushing focuses on control, consistency, and product quality. The machines used here are designed for that purpose. The most common types include:
Cone Crushers: The dominant choice for secondary (and tertiary) crushing. They compress rock between a rotating mantle and a stationary concave, producing well-graded, consistent product. Ideal for hard, abrasive materials.
Impact Crushers: More common in softer rock (such as limestone) or recycling applications. They use high-speed impact to break material, often delivering a more cubical particle shape.
How Is It Different from a Primary Crusher?
This is a common question. The main differences come down to three things:

The name comes from its place in the crushing circuit. The sequence is:
Primary Crushing: First size reduction from run-of-quarry feed.
Secondary Crushing: Second reduction stage, preparing material for further processing.
Tertiary Crushing: Final stage for fine products (if required).
Without a secondary crusher, the gap between the primary crusher’s output and the feed size required by the grinding mill would be too large. It’s the crucial link that makes the entire size reduction circuit efficient and effective.
