1. What is the basic definition of a primary crusher?
A primary crusher is a heavy-duty machine that performs the first stage of material size reduction. It takes large, blasted rock—often called run-of-mine (ROM) material—directly from the quarry or mine and reduces it to a smaller, more manageable size for downstream equipment such as conveyors, screens, and secondary or tertiary crushers.
2. What types of crushers are typically used as primary crushers?
Not all crushers are designed for this first stage. The most common types include:
Jaw Crushers: The most widely used primary crusher. They operate like a giant jaw, compressing rock between one fixed and one moving plate. Known for reliability and the ability to handle hard, abrasive materials.
Gyratory Crushers: Typically found in large-scale mining operations where throughput exceeds 2,500 tons per hour. They offer continuous crushing action but involve higher capital cost and more complex installation.
