Not every crushing method delivers the same results. Selecting the optimal crusher for your aggregates operation requires a clear understanding of how different mechanisms affect efficiency, operating costs, and product shape.

Impact vs. Compression – Key Differences
Compression crushers (jaw, cone, gyratory, and roll crushers) exert gradual pressure to break material. They generally require less maintenance, as wear is lower compared to impact systems. However, they tend to produce flatter, elongated particles.
Impact crushers (horizontal shaft impactors – HSI, and vertical shaft impactors – VSI) use high-speed collisions to fracture rock. This generates a cubical, well-shaped product – ideal for many high-spec applications – but at the cost of higher wear and more frequent maintenance.
Horizontal Shaft Impactor (HSI) – Best Uses
HSI crushers excel as portable solutions. They offer high reduction ratios in closed circuits and produce a cubical product. However, their efficiency drops when targeting finer sizes below 1.5” (38 mm). Below 1” (25 mm), wear costs escalate sharply.
Typical HSI applications include:
- Limestone quarries and limestone-based materials
- Asphalt and concrete recycling
- Small-scale sand & gravel operations
- Processing pre-crushed or soft materials
Cone Crusher – Best Uses
As a compression crusher, the cone type offers less material versatility than an HSI but provides exceptional control over final product sizing. For example, if set at 2” (50 mm), approximately 80% of the output will meet that exact target – a level of precision that jaw or impact crushers cannot guarantee.
Cone crushers do have lower reduction ratios and are sensitive to contamination (e.g., fines or tramp metal). Nevertheless, they are the preferred finishing crusher for producing consistent, high-quality aggregate.
Typical cone crusher applications include:
- Secondary or tertiary crushing in hard rock and gravel circuits
- Pebble crushing in mining operations
- Manufactured construction aggregates
